First time at this place. Gave it a4 star rating as there were hits and misses. We had the traditional Japanese table and service was good. Good service, we were attended by a patient lady server. My favourite was the beef ishinabe ( beef rice in hot stone bowl) …most amazing dish we had there. The sashimi and Chirashi were fresh and good.

I can’t believe it’s my first time here since the restaurant moved here from Siglap. Family run establishments feel more personal compared to those big ones in the malls. Place is clean, decor is tasteful, food is good and prices reasonable. Good place for family meal as menu selection is wide enough to satisfy grown ups and kids. I see quite a number of families with young children quietly enjoying their food. I enjoyed watching their new robot server delivering food from the kitchen. Definitely will go back again when I have a craving for Japanese food. There’s free parking in front of the restaurant (if you’re lucky) or paid basement parking in the building next door or street side URA parking.

Finally paid a visit to this restaurant after hearing an extremely positive review from a friend. Food is extremely fresh and delicious although slightly pricier, but you pay for what you get and I would gladly pay for this quality of food! Service is also fast and staff are extremely friendly, plus they offer free parking right outside the restaurant. Would definitely visit again :)

Chanced upon this Japanese restaurant on a Saturday evening and decided to give it a try. The staff were polite and fast to serve us. However, there could have be better time management. Understandable that they were quite busy, but they could have told us before hand that the item I ordered would take a while. My partner had the curry katsu ($12.9) and I ordered the shabu shabu ($19.80). They served the curry katsu promptly and I didn't want my partner's food to get cold so I told him to go ahead. He didn't rush to eat but half way through we wondered if the order went through to the kitchen. So we asked the staff 2 times and it was only after a 20 minutes wait AFTER my partner finished that I got my meal. The shabu soup tasted good, was light and sweet but very flavorful. Tons of veggies and the meat slices were thick. The ponzy and seasame sauce complemented the meal well. The curry katsu was nothing to shout about. Overall was satisfied with the taste of the meal but could have been better managed.

Decided to try this Japanese restaurant Was disappointed with the ramen It tasted like instant ramen Egg was cold It would be nice if it was warmer Benton was not to our liking Salmon was fresh and had melt-in-mouth texture Was disappointed they offered sushi with crab stick meat. We were hopping for less processed food in my bento set. Salad dressing was an overkill - too salty Tamago sushi was more on the dull shade unlike the appetising shade we’ve tried Seaweed that was used to wrap the sushi was meagre Sadly will not be returning anytime soon

Our go-to place for frequent Japanese food craving. They offer a wide variety of food at reasonable price and high quality. The ambiance is nice, cozy and comfortable setting. The service is fantastic, nothing to complain about. I feel like their strength is in the sushi, sashimi, fried and rice bowls. The soupy bowls like ramen, udon are not impressive but acceptable. Overall a very safe dining option - you can order anything on the menu and can't hardly go wrong. They have butter fish sushi which is interesting, low price and totally satisfying - recommended.

I've been a longtime customer of Megumi of more than 15 years, and in it's heyday at Siglap would eat there once a week. At the time, it was by far the best Japanese restaurant in the east. Sadly I think that standards have fallen significantly. For instance, the Maki (picture below) has become tiny with a light smattering of fish roe, just a little filling and was falling apart because the rice was dryish/hard when it was made. The sashimi tasted as unfresh as it looked, with the flesh becoming a deep pink and losing the translucency of the white fat marbling. The edamame appeared to have been taken out of a microwave rather than steamed, with the entire dish emanating immense heat and the beans turning mushy. It is extremely sad to me because this is a restaurant that I've grown up with and loved, and which I hope will do well in the future. I'd like to make the following suggestions: (a) The menu has aged and looks nearly exactly the same as it did 15 years ago and needs updating -- for instance, the ramen may have been fine a decade ago but can't stack up against new competitors bringing in more authentic recipes. IMHO I'd suggest taking a look at Eat Tokyo in London which is probably the pinnacle of Japanese casual dining. Their menu is not only simple for staff to prepare, made of inexpensive ingredients, but also really tasty. Their recipes are all public on Amazon UK if you look for a book called "more than SUSHI". (b) Megumi is much lower on the value for money totem pole than it was before as the food is neither cheap nor particularly excellent -- I'd suggest trying some of your competitors (there's a good one at Katong V) to get a sense of the market. To some extent I suspect this is because rental costs per customer are higher because your current premises are large but don't seem to be fully utilized. (c) Food consistency is pretty hit and miss. This month seems to be terrible for some reason with portions shrinking and food not very fresh. I'd suggest maintaining a consistent level to avoid damaging brand equity and raising prices if necessary while keeping in line with other competitors as per (b) I'll keep coming back now and then, and I hope to be able to change this score to 5 someday. All the best.
